First of Dubai’s free Wi-Fi stations flourish in Zabeel Park

As if we needed more of an excuse to be on our phones when out and about, the first of around 50 free Wi-Fi stations, called Smart Palms, has been unveiled Zabeel Park.

At six metres tall and shaped like a palm tree, Smart Palms will eventually provide free Wi-Fi and fast mobile phone charging to visitors across many of Dubai’s parks, beaches and elsewhere.

Each station is said to offer a high-speed connection up to a range of 53 metres, can support up to 50 users at a time and charge phones and tablets more than two times faster than a regular plug. All this and they rely entirely on solar power.

The new technology will pop up across the city at locations including Al Mamzar Park, Al Barsha Pond Park and, when the revamping is finished, at Dubai Creek Park.

Similar to the information points at The Beach on JBR, the Smart Palms also feature screens where users discover weather information, local news, Dubai information and a selfie camera.

Dubai Municipality director general Hussain Lootah said: “Dubai has developed an international reputation as a place for technology and innovation. Through Smart Palm, the public will be able to benefit from free direct access to the internet while providing valuable public information covering a range of topics including weather forecasts and orientation guides.”

The new technology, which took ten months to deliver, is a result of cooperation between Dubai Municipality, the Smart Palm creators D Idea Media, Du, Sun Tab Solar Energy and Promo Tech Gulf Industry.
